A study led by geneticist Dieter Egli at Columbia University has been published on the Biorxiv platform. The team employed a base editing method to alter DNA in human embryos, avoiding the typical damage associated with CRISPR technology. However, the embryos were not allowed to develop further, a key detail in the ongoing research context. The work received funding from Nucleus Genomics.

During the experiment, scientists targeted two genetic sequences linked to cholesterol regulation and hemoglobin production. Many of the edited embryos exhibited mosaicism, a critical factor for interpreting the results.

Komor also noted that 'the lack of strict federal oversight in the U.S. could encourage further experiments in this area.' The study has sparked debate among bioethicists. Ana Iltis of Wake Forest University raised concerns about potential consequences, stating that 'some harmful effects might only become apparent after a child is born.'

Meanwhile, Nathan Treff, a co-author and chief clinical officer at Nucleus Genomics, commented: 'There is still a long way to go before this can be used to treat or prevent diseases, but this study brings science closer to that goal.'

Geneticist Fyodor Urnov from the University of California, Berkeley, highlighted the ethical dimensions, observing that 'researchers are essentially creating a guide for those who want to pursue genetic enhancement of future children outside ethical boundaries.'
