Living Coral Reef Discovered Near Benin
Off the coast of Benin, researchers have uncovered a living coral reef that had been presumed dead since the 1960s. Gérard Zinzindohoué remarked: 'This expedition was no easy task. Long days at sea, technical setbacks, and plenty of uncertainty. But when reef-like structures began appearing on the sonar, hope grew that we were close to our goal.'
Zinzindohoué emphasized that 'to our knowledge, this is the first confirmed living mesophotic coral ecosystem on the continental shelf of the Gulf of Guinea.' He also raised a critical point about researchers’ understanding of West Africa’s coastal zones: 'This really shows how little we still know about the coastal areas of West Africa. If we managed to find this reef after 60 years, how many more remain undocumented or simply forgotten?'
Historical records suggest the reef may extend up to 40 kilometers along the coastline. Scientists did not take direct coral samples, so the exact species identification of the reef’s inhabitants requires further confirmation.
