UK Military Experts Deployed
At the request of several regional nations, the United Kingdom has dispatched military specialists in counter-drone warfare to the Middle East. The first contingent departed on Tuesday, March 3, with additional British personnel expected to follow later this week. Among those deploying are soldiers from the 12th Regiment Royal Artillery, the British Army's primary unit specializing in counter-unmanned aerial systems. This deployment highlights the growing global demand for expertise against drone threats, which have become a persistent feature of modern conflict.
Cooperation with Ukraine
The mission aims to provide specialized advice to Middle Eastern countries facing challenges from unmanned aerial vehicles. As a source told The Telegraph:
“The first group are Brits who have experience in Ukraine and with Ukrainians, and they will be able to offer specialized advice, including on how they can combine sensing, warning and targeting against drones.”
Separately, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has proposed a 'silent exchange' format to Middle Eastern nations, under which Ukraine is prepared to provide specialists and interceptor drones to defend the region against Iranian 'Shahed' drones. In return, Ukraine has requested the transfer of PAC-3 surface-to-air missiles, which are in the inventories of Middle Eastern states, to bolster its own air defenses. Thus, British and Ukrainian efforts are converging to address emerging security threats in the Middle East.
The dispatch of British military experts underscores increasing international collaboration to counter new threats, particularly the use of drones, which are becoming more prevalent in conflicts.
