Venice Carnival's 'Best Mask' Competition
The annual Venice Carnival, running from January 31 to February 17, 2026, has held its 'Best Mask' contest, a highlight of the festivities. German costume designer Horst Raak claimed the top award. This year's carnival theme is linked to the upcoming Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, integrating athletic spirit into the historic celebration.
Horst Raak secured the main prize for his collection titled 'The court of the white elephant'. The competition's finalists gathered in St. Mark's Square, the carnival's primary venue. Artistic director Massimo Cecchetto explained that the carnival's theme changes annually; this year's focus on the Olympics led organizers to draw inspiration from the sporting competitions historically held during the carnival period.
Awards and Participant Experiences
Additional prizes were also awarded. Italian artisan Maria Lipari received the 'Most Original Costume' award, while Venetian designer Giulia Moraski won the prize for 'Best Thematic Costume'. Both designers shared their enthusiasm for participating, emphasizing the event's role in fostering cultural exchange and creativity.
'Creating these costumes demanded significant time and effort,' noted Horst Raak.
In his acceptance speech, Raak expressed his delight with the award and highlighted the importance of cultural dialogue, as his work blends elements from various cultures. Maria Lipari spoke of her passion for carnival costumes, which began eight years ago, stating she returns to Venice each year with a new creation. Giulia Moraski pointed out that the carnival provides a superb opportunity for people worldwide to meet and share their artistic achievements.
The 2026 Venice Carnival thus continues its tradition of uniting people through art, culture, and shared values, exemplified by the 'Best Mask' competition. This event not only showcases designer creativity but also serves as a platform for global cultural exchange. The integration of Olympic-themed elements into Venice's artistic traditions underscores the importance of shared values in a global context. The Venice Carnival remains a major cultural attraction, drawing artists and tourists from across the world and promoting the development of art and cultural identity.
