Venezuela Receives Oil Tankers: How New US Sanctions Affected Exports

Венесуела отримала нові танкери для постачання нафти: наслідки санкцій США для експортних можливостей.

Situation of Venezuela's Oil Industry

Venezuela has received the arrival of oil tankers despite new US sanctions that have led to a decline in oil exports. Two oil tankers have already arrived at Venezuelan shores, and several others are headed in that direction. This occurs against the backdrop of a significant decrease in Venezuela's exports, which have halved compared to November.

It is important to note that the volume of oil stuck in tankers has risen to 16 million barrels. This situation arose amid the seizure of two oil shipments by American naval forces. Currently, nearly twenty tankers can be seen at Jose port, waiting for further instructions.

Negotiations and Challenges

In December, PDVSA engaged in negotiations regarding discounts and possible changes to contracts, indicating the difficulties facing Venezuela's oil industry. Additionally, a cyberattack that disabled PDVSA's administrative system has further complicated the situation.

It is noteworthy that only Chevron has US permission to export Venezuelan oil. As Venezuela's oil minister stated:

"We are not halting exports"

The situation of Venezuela's oil industry demonstrates a complex balance between international sanctions and internal challenges. Despite the restrictions, the country is attempting to maintain exports, albeit under conditions of declining production and cargo accumulation. This may indicate attempts to find new markets or adapt to current economic realities, however, risks remain high due to geopolitical and economic factors.
