US Vice President Jay D. Vance stated that America does not plan to take on the entire burden of resolving the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, but expects active involvement from European countries. He emphasized that Europe must play a key role in stopping the war and violence.
'I think we should be helpful if it is necessary to stop the war and stop the killings. But I think we should expect, and the president certainly expects, that Europe will play a leading role here. And he has made it very clear: look, the United States is open to discussion, but we will not take on obligations until we figure out what will be necessary to stop the war in the first place... But whatever happens, in whatever form it may take, the Europeans will have to bear the lion's share of the burden'
In response to a question about a possible meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian leader Vladimir Putin, the vice president stressed that a personal meeting could be useful in resolving issues that are difficult to negotiate in a bureaucratic format.
'I think if you go through the bureaucratic process, the answer will be 'yes'. But I think the president, and I would prefer, that they meet regardless of the circumstances, you don’t need to sort out every issue, and sometimes leaders say that a personal meeting can resolve this issue that their teams are not necessarily equipped to handle'
Jay D. Vance stated that the US hopes for an active position from Europe in resolving the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. He also noted the importance of personal meetings between leaders as a tool for addressing complex issues.
