Bill Aims to Remove Women from Military Registry
A bill has been submitted to Ukraine's parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, seeking to remove women who were incorrectly placed on the military registry due to legal violations. The authors of the legislation highlight the existing problem of unjustified registrations and the lack of a formal mechanism to correct such errors.
The draft law, titled 'On Military Duty and Military Service,' was initiated by the following members of parliament:
- Dmytro Razumkov
- Heorhiy Mazurashu
- Mariana Bezuhla
- Oksana Dmitrieva
- Dmytro Mykysha
While the full text of the bill is not yet published on the parliament's website, it has been submitted for consideration to the parliamentary leadership.
Issues with Female Military Registration
This initiative follows a previous parliamentary decision to adopt in principle bill No. 12076, which provides for registering women who voluntarily wish to perform basic military service. This legislative activity comes amid broader changes to military service rules in Ukraine. Dmytro Razumkov noted a concerning trend:
'Today, women who have never served, do not have a military specialty, and are not medical professionals are suddenly being sought by recruitment centers, listed in registers of draft evaders, and receiving fines of 17,000 hryvnias. Such cases are unfortunately no longer isolated.' Dmytro Razumkov
This underscores the urgent need for new norms to properly regulate the military registration of women.
If passed, this bill could significantly alter approaches to female military registration in Ukraine. It would help prevent situations where individuals who should not be registered face administrative sanctions. The initiative's importance lies in ensuring fairness within the military registry, a particularly pressing issue given recent legislative shifts concerning women's military service. This proposal represents a potential step toward clearer and more equitable regulation of military duties for all Ukrainian citizens.
In light of ongoing legislative efforts to reform military registration processes, it is essential to recognize the broader implications of recent military law changes. For instance, the recent law signed by Zelenskyy mandates investigations into harassment complaints, highlighting the need for a comprehensive approach to ensure the protection and fair treatment of all service members in the military framework.
