Appointment of Denys Shmyhal

The Verkhovna Rada appointed Denys Shmyhal to the positions of Minister of Energy and First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine on January 12, 2023. 248 deputies voted for Shmyhal's appointment, confirming support for his candidacy in parliament.

However, the previous attempt to appoint Shmyhal to this position, which took place on January 13, 2023, was unsuccessful. At that time, 210 deputies supported his candidacy, but 226 votes were needed for a successful appointment. This indicates certain disagreements among deputies regarding his appointment.

Political Changes and Challenges

In addition, during the session of the Verkhovna Rada, 265 deputies voted for the dismissal of Denys Shmyhal from the position of Minister of Defense of Ukraine. At the same time, 330 deputies supported the extension of martial law in Ukraine for another 90 days, which will last until February 3, 2026. These decisions highlight the importance of political changes and current challenges that the country faces.

The appointment of Denys Shmyhal to new positions indicates an attempt by the authorities to ensure stability in the energy sector amid the ongoing military conflict. At the same time, his dismissal from the position of Minister of Defense may indicate the need for new strategies to be implemented in the military sphere. The continuation of martial law emphasizes that the situation in the country remains complex and will require decisive actions from the government and parliament in the coming months.
