Kharkiv Veteran Creates Cork-Floated Cup for the Visually Impaired at Lviv’s UNBROKEN Center

Ветеран з Харкова розробив унікальну чашку з корковою основою для людей з вадами зору в Центрі UNBROKEN у Львові.

Innovative Solutions for the Visually Impaired

Kostyantyn Tsirkot, a veteran from Kharkiv, has designed a special cup equipped with a cork float that signals when it is filled to a safe level. This invention was developed at the creative workshop of the UNBROKEN center in Lviv, aiming to enhance daily living for people with vision impairments by providing a safer way to use drinkware.

After sustaining severe injuries during combat missions in Donetsk and Kharkiv regions—including a concussion, spinal fracture, and limb amputation caused by a mine explosion—Kostyantyn began rehabilitating at the UNBROKEN center. It was there that he discovered ceramics as a form of therapy and creative expression. Joining the workshop team, he focused on crafting practical items tailored to the needs of individuals with visual disabilities and amputations.

Employment Challenges and Inclusive Progress

In Ukraine, approximately 20% of employed people with disabilities have vision impairments. Despite this, nearly half of employers remain hesitant to hire them, perceiving potential risks. Against this backdrop, innovations developed by veterans and specialists offer promising ways to improve inclusion and accessibility in the workforce.

Additionally, members of the UNBROKEN center’s Theatre of the Unbroken recently staged the tragicomedy "Elevator Director" at Lviv’s First Theatre. The performance raised funds for Mark Hladiysh, who suffers from Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Veteran Valentyn Oleksienko also took to the dance floor for the first time in a charity event supporting the UNBROKEN KIDS rehabilitation unit in Lviv, which helps children affected by the war and severe medical conditions.

Veteran-driven innovations like these specially adapted cups significantly improve the quality of life for people with disabilities.

They highlight how creativity combined with practical solutions can address real-world challenges. Such inclusive initiatives play a vital role in building a society that genuinely meets the needs of all its members, especially those living with visual impairments.

In addition to innovative designs like Kostyantyn's cup, other initiatives are emerging to support veterans in their journey towards independence. For instance, free adaptive motorcycling lessons in Odessa are helping veterans regain confidence and mobility, showcasing the diverse ways in which communities are rallying to enhance the lives of those who have served.
