The Story of Oleksandr Shestaka

While on rotation near Toretsk, veteran Oleksandr Shestaka's vehicle was struck by an enemy FPV drone. The attack cost him his sight and inflicted severe injuries to his arm and knee. He is now undergoing a recovery program called 'Reboot 2.0' to rebuild his life. FPV drones, often called 'kamikaze drones,' have become a devastating feature of modern warfare, causing complex injuries that require extensive rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation and New Skills

The 'Reboot 2.0' course has equipped the veteran with essential daily living skills and taught him to use a smartphone with specialized software. He has also taken up playing the guitar. Oleksandr participated in art therapy, where he worked on an image of an oak tree, explaining:

“Since we cannot see, we must imagine everything. I picture this tree in my mind and feel it with my hands. It greatly develops the imagination.”
- Oleksandr Shestaka

Oleksandr Shestaka is determined to return to work within the Ministry of Internal Affairs system, emphasizing the crucial importance of regaining his autonomy:

“It is incredibly important to feel independent again.”

This narrative highlights the profound challenges faced by veterans transitioning back to civilian life after suffering traumatic injuries. Rehabilitation initiatives like 'Reboot 2.0' are vital in helping former service members adapt, supporting the recovery of both their physical capabilities and psychological well-being. For Oleksandr, resuming his role in the Ministry of Internal Affairs represents a significant milestone in reclaiming his independence and self-sufficiency.
