South Korea Launches Probe and Evacuation After Ship Explosion Near Iran

Після вибуху на судні біля іранського узбережжя Південна Корея розпочала розслідування та організувала евакуацію.

Investigation Underway into HMM Namu Incident

South Korean authorities have officially launched an investigation into the cause of an explosion and fire aboard the cargo vessel HMM Namu in the Strait of Hormuz. The incident, which occurred on Monday, May 4, has raised concerns amid escalating security tensions in the region. The HMM Namu is a 35,000-ton cargo ship operated by South Korean shipping giant HMM and sailing under the Panamanian flag. At the time of the blast, the vessel was empty and anchored.

According to official data from South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, all 24 crew members were on board and no injuries were reported. The fire broke out in the engine room but was quickly extinguished. The ship is now being prepared for towing to the nearest port for damage assessment and to determine whether the explosion resulted from an internal malfunction or an external attack, such as a naval mine.

Global Leaders React

U.S. President Donald Trump quickly responded to the event on Truth Social, accusing Iran of attacking the vessel. Trump also noted that the explosion occurred just as the United States had launched an operation to clear the Strait of Hormuz for free navigation.

In response to the incident, South Korea's Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries ordered all Korean vessels in the region to immediately move to safer locations. It is known that 26 ships flying the South Korean flag are currently stranded near the Strait of Hormuz.

Ship traffic in the Strait of Hormuz remains minimal, with most vessels using the Iranian traffic separation scheme rather than the 'Project Freedom' corridor announced by the United States. This waterway is strategically vital, as it handles one-fifth of the world's oil and gas supplies.

The HMM Namu incident highlights the growing risks to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, where tensions between the U.S. and Iran are already elevated. South Korean and U.S. authorities, responding to the situation, are working to ensure the safety of their vessels and crews—underscoring the region's importance to the global economy. The analysis of the explosion's cause could influence future actions by countries in securing maritime routes in this strategic zone.

In light of the ongoing tensions in the region, the recent incident involving the HMM Namu is not isolated. The situation has escalated with the U.S. Navy's seizure of an Iranian cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman, highlighting the precarious security dynamics affecting maritime operations. This development adds another layer of complexity to an already volatile environment in the Strait of Hormuz.
