Restoration of Ukraine's energy system will take up to a year and a half: assessment after massive attacks

Відновлення енергетики України потребуватиме до півтора року: оцінка наслідків численних атак.

Restoration of Ukraine's Energy System

The restoration of Ukraine's energy system after massive Russian attacks will take from a year to a year and a half, which significantly exceeds the optimistic forecasts of some experts who indicated a timeline of six months. This was stated by the head of the energy efficiency subcommittee, Serhiy Nahornyak.

State of the Energy System

As of January 13, Russian troops had launched about 300 drones and dozens of rockets at Ukraine. Recent drone strikes targeted critical infrastructure facilities, including:

  • Kaniv Hydroelectric Power Station
  • Dnipro Hydroelectric Power Station
  • Middle Dnipro Hydroelectric Power Station
  • Trypillia Thermal Power Station
  • 'Ukrenergo' substations

Serhiy Nahornyak emphasized that currently, there is no talk of restoration, and it is 'very far' from restoring the energy system. According to his estimates, Ukraine will need at least two to three times more time to restore its infrastructure. He also noted that the region cannot either provide or receive the necessary assistance from outside.

The importance of this conclusion lies in the fact that it underscores the seriousness of the situation in Ukraine's energy sector, which has sustained significant damage due to military actions. The long-term restoration of infrastructure may have serious implications for the country's energy security as well as for the economy as a whole. In the context of an ongoing war, the ability to obtain external assistance and investments for recovery remains critically important for the faster restoration of energy capacities.
