Expulsions for Absences: Why Universities are Strictly Monitoring Male Students of Draft Age

Контроль за відвідуванням: як навчальні заклади стежать за студентами-чоловіками призивного віку

The Situation with Attendance of Male Students in Ukraine

In Ukraine, universities have begun strict attendance checks for male students of draft age due to the increasing number of such students in educational institutions. Students who miss classes risk being expelled and losing the opportunity to receive a deferment from conscription.

In 2022, 576 men of draft age enrolled in higher education. However, in 2023, their number rose to almost 6000. According to the latest data, in 2024, over 55,500 men have been recorded as having enrolled for education. This trend has raised concerns in universities, prompting them to take measures to control attendance.

Nataliya Pipa: 'All those students who were absent from classes - whether once or twice - were expelled. And this continues to be done.'

Thus, universities jeopardize the education of those who do not comply with attendance requirements in order to ensure military readiness and fulfill state obligations.

The Importance of Attendance Control

This situation underscores the importance of attendance monitoring in the context of military obligations and mobilization in Ukraine. The increase in the number of male students in educational institutions is driven not only by the desire to gain education but also by the wish to avoid conscription. In response to the challenges of the time, universities are forced to adopt strict measures to ensure compliance with state obligations, creating new challenges for students and the education system as a whole.
