Denys Antipov: A Hero of Ukraine

Denys Antipov, a 33-year-old Ukrainian soldier, Korean language instructor, and veteran of the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO), lost his life on May 11 in the village of Dovhenke, Kharkiv region. Born on June 30, 1989, in the Ivano-Frankivsk region, he spent his early years in the village of Khotymyr before his family relocated to Kyiv, where he lived most of his life.

In 2012, he graduated from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv with a degree in 'Language, Literature, and Translation' (Korean and English) and stayed on as a lecturer. Fluent in multiple languages, Antipov completed internships at Seoul National University in 2008 and at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in 2011. An active volunteer during the Euromaidan Revolution of Dignity, he enlisted as a volunteer in 2015 with the 5th Battalion Tactical Group of the 81st Separate Airmobile Brigade, adopting the call sign 'Buk'.

Military Service and Death

Antipov fought in Donetsk and Luhansk regions, taking part in battles near the Donetsk airport, the Avdiivka industrial zone, and the Svitlodarsk bulge. After returning from the ATO, he was promoted to lieutenant and became a platoon commander in aerial reconnaissance. Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, he rejoined the front lines as part of the 95th Separate Air Assault Brigade.

On March 9, he sustained a concussion and shrapnel wounds during an artillery strike in Dovhenke. After treatment at a hospital in Dnipro, he returned to the front a month later to continue defending the country. At the time of his death, Antipov suffered a fatal shrapnel wound to the head. His mother, Maria Antipova, says she spoke with him daily, but he stopped answering calls on May 11.

His mother recalls that Denys lived for the university and wanted to instill lifelong knowledge in his students. He was proficient in many languages and had opportunities to move abroad, but he would always reply: 'Not for any billions would I leave Ukraine.'

Denys Antipov gave his life so that Ukraine could have a bright, independent future. He did not become a father himself, but he fought for the chance for our children to be born. He was laid to rest in the village of Khotymyr, part of the Obertyn community. Every day at 9 a.m., Ukrainians hold a moment of silence to honor all those whose lives have been taken by the Russo-Ukrainian war.

The death of Denys Antipov underscores the tragic toll of the ongoing war in Ukraine and the heroism of those who serve their country with devotion. His life and work highlight the importance of education, patriotism, and personal responsibility in the fight for independence. The memory of people like Denys continues to live on in the hearts of Ukrainians, who daily pay tribute to the heroes who gave their lives for Ukraine.

The bravery and sacrifice of Ukrainian defenders like Denys Antipov are echoed in the stories of many heroes who have given their lives for the country. For instance, Andrii Subotin, a border guard, also made the ultimate sacrifice while saving over 80 lives in Mariupol. Such acts of valor highlight the profound impact of these individuals on the ongoing conflict and the nation's resilience.
