Victor Yushchenko's Open Letter

Former Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko addressed an open letter to Donald Trump, urging the United States to uphold its commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and condemning the trade in Russian diesel fuel. Yushchenko highlighted that revenues from Russian fuel sales directly finance the ongoing war in Ukraine, emphasizing that every dollar spent on this diesel supports aggression against his country. The letter was shared on Yushchenko’s Facebook page in response to recent agreements between Trump and Russia regarding diesel fuel supplies.

In his message, Yushchenko recalled Ukraine’s voluntary decision in 1994 to relinquish the world's third-largest nuclear arsenal in pursuit of global peace, trusting the security assurances provided by the U.S. and its allies under the Budapest Memorandum.

“America assumed a moral and legal duty to serve as our shield and protector. Can we now, faced with a ruthless enemy, overlook America's signature on this vital agreement?” — Victor Yushchenko

Responses from Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. Senators

President Volodymyr Zelensky also voiced concern over Trump’s move to permit imports of Russian petroleum products, warning that loosening sanctions without efforts to de-escalate the conflict only empowers Moscow to prolong its war efforts. Meanwhile, on October 11, 2026, a bipartisan group of U.S. senators publicly criticized Trump’s decision to allow Russian diesel imports, underscoring bipartisan opposition to the policy.

“It’s shocking and painful to hear calls for Ukraine to 'stand down,' to be told whom to choose or how to live, or to see the green light given to trade in Russian diesel. Doing business with an aggressor amid this slaughter is fueling their war machine.” — Victor Yushchenko

Ukrainian defense forces have responded to Russian attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure by targeting oil facilities within Russia. Against the backdrop of this ongoing conflict, the debate over lifting sanctions on Russian diesel has intensified, sparking outrage both in Ukraine and the United States.

The controversy surrounding Russian diesel trade and the U.S. obligation to defend Ukraine highlights the critical role of international support for Ukraine’s sovereignty. Yushchenko’s letter, alongside reactions from Zelensky and American lawmakers, reflects widespread anxiety about the possible consequences of easing sanctions. Such moves risk undermining Ukraine’s sovereignty and regional stability, demanding a careful and considered response from the global community.

In light of Yushchenko's urgent plea, it's important to note that U.S. senators have also expressed strong disapproval of Trump's decision regarding Russian diesel imports. Their condemnation highlights concerns that this move undermines existing laws aimed at supporting Ukraine and could further embolden Russian aggression.
