US Senators Condemn Trump’s Approval of Russian Diesel Imports as Violation of 2022 Law

US Senators oppose import of Russian fuel
Сенатори США висловили обурення через рішення Трампа про імпорт російського дизельного пального, назвавши його порушенням законодавства 2022 року.

US Senators Criticize Trump's Authorization of Russian Diesel Fuel Imports

According to Рубрика — Політика: On October 11, a bipartisan group of seven US senators publicly denounced President Donald Trump’s decision to permit the import of Russian diesel fuel into the United States. They emphasized that this move directly conflicts with a 2022 Congressional law banning the importation of Russian energy products. The senators also highlighted that the administration failed to consult with Congress or provide any justification for this decision.

According to reports, on October 9, 2026, Trump announced an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin to supply Russian diesel fuel to the US and global markets. In their joint statement, the senators stressed:

“In 2022, Congress explicitly prohibited the import of Russian energy resources to prevent American dollars from funding Putin’s brutal war against Ukraine.”

The senators urged the administration to urgently reverse course, warning that the United States should not offer financial support that acts as a lifeline for Putin while Russia continues to kill Ukrainian civilians.

President Zelensky’s Concerns

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also expressed alarm over the decision, describing it as an unwarranted easing of sanctions without any conditions for de-escalation. He stated:

“Easing sanctions on Russia without lasting agreements to reduce tensions will only enable Moscow to prolong the war.”

Zelensky further pointed out that recent strikes by Ukrainian Defense Forces on Russian oil infrastructure are retaliatory responses to Kremlin attacks on Ukraine’s energy systems.

The senators believe the US government must reassess its stance to align with international commitments and legal frameworks, calling for actions that reinforce support for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict. Additionally, Zelensky accused the US of using talks with Ukrainian negotiators in Miami as a cover for the diesel fuel arrangement with Russia. The early conclusion of these negotiations raised concerns about the strategic direction of US foreign policy.

This episode highlights rising tensions between US legislation and the Trump administration’s foreign policy approach, alongside the broader impact of Russia’s military actions on global relations. The senators’ sharp criticism and Zelensky’s apprehensions underscore the urgent need for strict adherence to sanctions and continued backing of Ukraine amid the prolonged conflict. Maintaining US commitments to the international community remains crucial in countering Russian aggression.

The backlash against Trump's decision is not isolated, as European leaders are also maintaining their stance on sanctions against Russia.
