Cognitive gains seen in adults over 50 who take high-dose vitamin D, study reports

Vitamin D intake and cognition: what the data show

A team led by Victoria Pak at Emory University in Atlanta has released findings suggesting that people aged 50 and older with cognitive complaints and poor sleep may score about 13% higher on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) when they take more than 125 mcg (5,000 IU) of vitamin D daily. The research, published in Sleep Medicine, is characterized by its authors as preliminary, and it does not establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship. With interest growing in nutritional strategies that might support brain aging, these results add to a broader conversation about modifiable risk factors.

What the results revealed

The study tracked 54 adults, all of whom had diagnosed or suspected cognitive impairment and also reported sleep problems. Alongside the MoCA, researchers used sleep-quality and daytime-sleepiness assessments. They adjusted for several variables, including:

  • age
  • sex
  • body mass index
  • education level

Those who consumed more than 125 mcg (5,000 IU) of vitamin D each day scored 3.78 points higher on the MoCA than participants not taking the supplement. The pattern held for both vitamin D2 and D3. Lower doses pointed toward improvement, but the difference was not statistically significant. It is worth noting that 125 mcg daily exceeds the generally recognized upper safety limit of 100 mcg (4,000 IU) per day.

The researchers stress that the findings are preliminary and based on a small sample, so there is no proven direct link between vitamin D use and cognitive improvement.
