Vitaliy Kim on Ukraine's Path to Peace

In an interview with the Independent, Vitaliy Kim, head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, shared his perspective on ending the war in Ukraine, the country's priorities, its current state, and his expectations for the future. Kim stated he anticipates the war will stop in 2026, followed by elections and the implementation of a Marshall Plan for Ukraine. His comments come as Ukraine continues to defend its sovereignty against a full-scale invasion that began in February 2022.

Kim emphasized that victory, for him, means restoring Ukraine's 1991 borders, where people are safe and can live happily. He pointed out that Ukrainians are weary of the war. For the Ukrainian people, he believes victory entails ending the conflict and securing future safety guarantees, so children can have a life similar to the one they knew before the invasion.

The Strain on Ukraine's People and Economy

Vitaliy Kim also addressed the exhaustion of Ukraine's population of 40 million. He described the situation in the country as critical, stating, "Our soldiers cannot fight for four to ten years." Kim believes the Russian economy is also suffering and has a few years before it begins to visibly decline. However, he stressed that Ukraine does not have that same luxury of time: "We are exhausted, and it's not about weapons, it's not about missiles, it's about people."

"In 2026, I expect the war to stop, elections to be held, and the Marshall Plan for Ukraine to be implemented," Kim summarized.

Kim's statements reflect the dire situation in Ukraine, where the prolonged war has caused immense human and economic losses. His prediction of a potential end to the conflict in 2026 and the implementation of a recovery plan points to hope for rebuilding, while also underscoring the country's critical state. Sustained international support remains crucial for Ukraine's stability and the security of future generations.
