Starting from October 12, the European Union will begin implementing a new border control system - the Entry-Exit System (EES). This system is designed to replace old methods of passport stamping and will record travelers' biometric data, but queues and delays may arise.
EES is an automated IT system that will ensure security and accurate monitoring of the stay of 'third country' nationals in the Schengen Area. The system encompasses 29 Schengen Area countries and will not affect holders of residence permits or long-term visas.
The full launch of EES is expected on April 10, 2026, following a phased implementation over six months. Travelers are advised to be prepared for biometric checks and to use self-service to avoid delays. After the launch of EES, the implementation of the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is also planned for 2026, which, together with EES, will enhance security at the borders of the European Union.
