A quite common situation in a car — spilling drinks on the dashboard or center console buttons — can lead to expensive repairs.
Experts explained how to act correctly in such cases and what you should absolutely not do, reports RBK-Ukraine.
Why liquid on buttons is a serious problem
- - Sweet drinks with sugar can glue the movable parts of the buttons, causing them to press but not return to their original position
- - Acidic liquids (juices, carbonated drinks) cause corrosion and oxidation of contacts
- - Under the influence of current and heat, the liquid can turn into an aggressive electrolyte that destroys copper tracks and contacts
- - A large amount of liquid can damage the board
Which buttons are most vulnerable
- Experts categorize the buttons in the cabin into three categories based on moisture resistance:
- The most resistant are the massive buttons with a long stroke
- The most vulnerable are the miniature buttons with a short stroke
- The best protected are the touch buttons in modern cars
What to do if liquid gets in
- - Immediately turn off the ignition
- - Remove moisture from the surface with paper towels
- - Blot moisture from crevices
- - Consult with an auto electrician
- - Dry in a warm place for several days
Risky methods
Cleaning with alcohol can help, but there is a risk of drawing the remaining liquid deeper into the board. The most effective but complicated method is disassembling the panel and washing it with alcohol followed by drying.
Categorically prohibited
- - Blowing the buttons with air
- - Pressing wet buttons
- - Drying with hot air nearby
Prevention
The best way to avoid problems is to use special closed cups for drinks in the car and to be careful while eating and drinking while driving.
In case of spilling liquid on car buttons, a serious problem may arise that requires expensive repairs. Experts advise to act promptly and avoid risky methods or disallowed actions to prevent damage and maintain the functionality of the car buttons.
