Loss of territories by Ukraine increased to 1700 km² in 2025: analysis of key events of the year
The pace of territorial loss by Ukraine sharply accelerated in 2025. As volunteer Taras Chmut stated, if in 2024 the difference between lost and reclaimed areas compared to 2023 was 110 km², in 2025 compared to 2024 this figure reached 1700 km². This data was revealed in an interview with political expert Ruslan Bezyayev, who analyzed the key events of the year.
Key events of the year
Among such events, the expert referred to the negotiations between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping on the Ukrainian issue in the spring of 2025. After that, according to Bezyayev, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov was effectively removed from the negotiation process, and the Kuitkov-Dmitriev algorithm was implemented. In the US budget for 2026, the Trump administration allocated 400 million dollars for assistance to Ukraine.
At the end of December, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk termed the American declaration of the US's readiness to participate in security guarantees for Ukraine after peace a key event.
“What could be the basis for such statements by the Polish Prime Minister? In my opinion, this is an attempt to draw the United States into a European concept of ending the war,” commented Ruslan Bezyayev.
The expert also cited Moscow's position, which refers to Washington: 'Washington believes that elections need to be held in Ukraine. Numerous Ukrainians living in Russia should also be granted the right to vote. The authorities in Kyiv may obtain a mandate to conclude peace only through elections.'
To achieve a breakthrough in the war, Bezyayev suggested focusing on the military-technical sphere, the quality of technical support, and an autonomous defense industry.
