Early parliamentary elections in Serbia

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, announced early parliamentary elections in 2026 against the backdrop of opposition protests. This decision was a response to the demands of the protesters who have repeatedly taken to the streets against the government. Vucic noted that meeting the protesters' demands aims to maintain stability in the country.

Reasons for the protests

The protests that swept through Serbia intensified after a mass collection of signatures by protesters on December 28, 2024. Among the reasons for public dissatisfaction was the collapse of a structure at the railway station in Novi Sad in November 2024, which resulted in the deaths of 16 people. This tragedy caused a significant public outcry and amplified demands for accountability and change from the government.

Furthermore, the Serbian government extended the agreement with Russia for gas supplies until March 2026, which may also influence the political situation in the country. Vucic stated that the results of next year’s elections will not please the protesters, but he urged for constructive dialogue and cooperation.

The announcement of early elections in Serbia reflects the growing pressure from society and the opposition on the government, as well as the need to restore public trust in political institutions. The tragedy in Novi Sad, which became a catalyst for the protests, underscores the importance of government accountability for its actions and the safety of citizens. In this context, the election results could determine the future course of the country and its relations with international partners, especially amidst ongoing economic negotiations with Russia.
