Usyk vs. Kabayel: WBC Imposes June 30 Deadline
The World Boxing Council (WBC) has mandated that a deal for a heavyweight championship bout between Oleksandr Usyk and Agit Kabayel must be reached by June 30. Should the boxers fail to come to an agreement, the fight will be sent to promotional purse bids. Usyk retains the option to step away from the contest, but doing so would require him to vacate his WBC title belt.
WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman confirmed that Kabayel, the organization’s interim heavyweight champion, is next in line to face Usyk. Turki Alalshikh, Chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, has also expressed his intention to stage the event. Usyk, the unified heavyweight world champion holding WBA, WBC, and IBF titles, recently secured his 25th professional victory by stopping Rico Verhoeven via technical knockout late in the 11th round.
Shifting Dynamics in the Heavyweight Division
Former world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury has declared he is ready to step in and fight Kabayel should Usyk decline. Fury, who currently holds the No. 1 spot in the WBC rankings, stated:
'I want to become a three-time world champion. There are several paths to get there, and I am in an excellent position. If Usyk pulls out of the Kabayel fight, then I will step in and face Agit.'Tyson Fury
These developments highlight the high stakes of the upcoming Usyk-Kabayel matchup, as it could significantly reshape the heavyweight rankings. With the possibility of Usyk losing his championship status and Fury’s clear interest, the boxing world may see major shifts in the near future. Monitoring the ongoing negotiations between the parties will provide greater clarity on the fate of this pivotal fight.
