In-flight internet coming to Wizz Air’s fleet

Hungarian low-cost carrier Wizz Air has announced plans to introduce Wi-Fi on its next-generation aircraft starting in 2025. The service will be powered by Starlink, the satellite internet constellation owned by Elon Musk’s SpaceX. Internet access will be available on every route connecting European destinations and will be installed on all Airbus A321neo and A320neo planes, which together make up 75% of Wizz Air’s fleet. This move could position Wizz Air as the first major budget airline in Europe to offer such a service across its network.

Competitive pressures in the airline industry

The introduction of onboard Wi-Fi marks a new chapter for Wizz Air. Connectivity will be offered regardless of the flight route, though the airline has not yet clarified the pricing model—whether it will be free, paid, or offered as a loyalty perk. Other airlines that have already rolled out Starlink internet provide it at no charge. Notably, passengers will be able to connect without logging in or enrolling in a frequent flyer program.

Rival carriers are also exploring similar upgrades. Ryanair, for instance, has indicated it could launch free internet within three to five years and is currently in talks with three potential providers:

  • Starlink
  • Amazon Web Services
  • Vodafone

A key condition for Ryanair is that antennas must be installed inside the fuselage. Meanwhile, Finnair is also planning to bring internet onboard and is negotiating with SpaceX’s Starlink and Amazon’s Project Kuiper (formerly Leo).

The availability of in-flight Wi-Fi is becoming an increasingly important factor for travelers when booking tickets. If Wizz Air can offer this service for free or under favorable terms, it could gain a significant competitive edge. This may pressure other airlines to accelerate their own connectivity initiatives, ultimately reshaping the European budget aviation market.

As Wizz Air prepares to enhance its in-flight experience, other airlines are also considering similar upgrades. For instance, Finnair is currently negotiating with Starlink and Amazon to implement onboard Wi-Fi solutions, highlighting the growing importance of connectivity in the competitive airline industry. This trend could reshape passenger expectations and influence airline choices in the near future.
