World Aquatics Lifts Ban on Russian and Belarusian Athletes, Prompting Ukrainian Protests and Forfeits

Ухвалення рішення про повернення спортсменів з Росії та Білорусі викликало хвилю незгоди серед українських атлетів та їх відмову від змагань.

Sanctions Lifted for Russian and Belarusian Competitors

World Aquatics, the global governing body for water sports, has decided to fully lift sanctions on Russian and Belarusian athletes. This move permits them to compete under their national flags, in team colors, and with their anthems. This marks a significant policy shift, as previously only sports like judo and sambo had removed such restrictions at the senior elite level. To be eligible, athletes must pass a background check by the Aquatics Integrity Unit (AQIU) and undergo four consecutive anti-doping tests supervised by the International Testing Agency (ITA). This decision reflects a broader, contentious trend in international sports governance regarding the reintegration of athletes from these nations.

In response, the Ukrainian diving and artistic swimming federations issued a joint statement demanding a reversal of the ruling. They argued that allowing Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete under national symbols is unacceptable given the ongoing war in Ukraine, highlighting the deep political divisions that now permeate international sport.

Ukrainian Team's Reaction and Forfeit

Further demonstrating this protest, the Ukrainian men's water polo team received a technical defeat for refusing to play against Russia. The forfeit occurred in the 7th-place match of the second division World Cup in Malta, scheduled for April 14, 2026. In the tournament's 5th-8th place semifinals, Ukraine lost to Australia 15:21, while Russia was defeated by Romania 12:16.

This tournament was the first for the Russian water polo team under World Aquatics' auspices since its suspension in 2022. Notably, World Aquatics is the first federation to readmit athletes from the aggressor nation in a neutral status for a team sport. The last time Ukrainian and Russian national teams met in a team sport was at Futsal Euro 2022, where Ukraine lost 2:3 in the semifinal. The water polo forfeit underscores how athletic events have become arenas for geopolitical protest, with Ukrainian athletes facing difficult choices between competition and principle.

The recent decision by World Aquatics has sparked significant backlash, particularly from Ukraine, which has taken a firm stand against competing with Russian athletes. This situation escalated when the Ukrainian men's water polo team faced a technical defeat due to their refusal to play against Russia, highlighting the ongoing tensions in international sports.
