Couple Dies in Rivne Region After Car Reverses into Water

Пара трагічно загинула у Рівненській області, коли їх автомобіль випадково скотився у воду.

Tragic Incident in Rivne Region

A married couple tragically drowned after the car they were in reversed into a body of water near the village of Khodosi in the Rivne region. The incident occurred when a 33-year-old woman, driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee, was moving in reverse. Unfortunately, during the maneuver, she failed to ensure the safety of her actions, which led to the vehicle entering the water. The bodies of the deceased, the 33-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man, were recovered from the river on March 15. Efforts to retrieve the vehicle from the water are currently ongoing.

Investigation and Road Accident Statistics

Investigative authorities have opened a criminal proceeding under Part 3 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which provides for liability for violating traffic safety rules resulting in the death of two people. As reported by the police,

"the woman, driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee while reversing, failed to ensure the safety of the maneuver and allowed the vehicle to drive into the water. The couple died at the scene."

Road accident statistics in Ukraine also raise concerns. In January-February 2023, 331 people died in traffic accidents, and nearly 3,500 were injured. Meanwhile, since March 6, an additional 37 automated systems for recording traffic violations have begun operating on Ukrainian roads. As of the time of publication, 2,009,913 fines for traffic violations have been recorded in Ukraine, which is 6% more than at the end of 2022. Notably, during the full-scale war, the number of unpaid fines has increased by 43%.

This tragic case underscores the critical importance of adhering to traffic rules, especially when performing maneuvers that require extra attention. With a rising number of accidents in Ukraine, new violation monitoring systems could play a key role in improving road safety. However, it also highlights the need to increase drivers' awareness of safe vehicle operation. Driving conditions in Ukraine remain challenging, with hazards ranging from damaged infrastructure to the psychological strain of the ongoing conflict.
