Spanish Train Drivers Strike Over Safety Following Fatal Accidents
Rail services across Spain are facing major disruptions due to a multi-day strike by train drivers. The drivers' unions have called a three-day strike to protest safety concerns, which have escalated following a series of recent railway accidents. On January 18, a high-speed train collision in the Andalusia region resulted in 45 fatalities. In a separate incident near Barcelona, a protective wall collapsed onto the tracks, causing a commuter train to derail. That accident killed the driver and left four passengers with serious injuries.
Spain's Transport Minister, Óscar Puente, attempted to negotiate with the unions over the weekend, but the talks failed. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is scheduled to deliver a brief report on the railway's operations to parliament on February 11, but the situation remains tense for now. This strike highlights the severe pressure on European rail networks to maintain safety standards amidst aging infrastructure and high passenger volumes.

In a separate development, the Kyiv Children's Railway has switched to year-round operation for the first time, running autonomously on a heat-powered traction system independent of external electricity. The carriages on the Kyiv Children's Railway are also equipped with internal heating.
