Remembering Taras Riabukha

Every morning at 9 a.m., Ukrainians honor those whose lives were taken by the Russian-Ukrainian war. Today, we remember Taras Riabukha, a master sergeant who died on May 28, 2023, while carrying out a combat mission near the village of Ivanivske in the Bakhmut district of Donetsk region. His life stands as a testament to courage and dedication, and his death represents a profound loss for both his family and the nation.

The Life of Taras Riabukha

Born on March 9, 1988, in the village of Baidakove, Kirovohrad region, Taras Riabukha completed his education at Omelnyk School and later earned vocational training at Kremenchuk Vocational School No. 6. In 2006, he moved with his mother to Odesa, and eventually settled in Novoyavorivsk, Lviv region. After serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine from 2008 to 2010, he returned to defend his country following the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war in 2014. He took part in the defense of Donetsk Airport as a member of the 3rd Special Forces Regiment, and also served in the 79th Separate Air Assault Brigade.

Starting in October 2021, Taras served in the 80th Separate Air Assault Brigade. Initially holding the position of master sergeant, he was appointed platoon commander in 2023. For his service, Taras Riabukha received several honors:

  • the Order for Courage, Third Class,
  • the Exemplary Service medal,
  • the Exemplary Military Service medal, and
  • the Defense of Donetsk Airport medal.

Posthumously, he was awarded the Order for Courage, Second Class, and the Steel Cross honorary badge from the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He is buried in Novoyavorivsk, Lviv region.

His wife Natalia shared memories in his honor:

“I also serve in the military. Taras and I met at the unit in 2019. A week later, he proposed, and I said yes. In 2020, we had a son, and in 2023, a daughter. He only saw her once—at her christening. When she was a month and a half old, he was killed… Our son remembers his dad and misses him terribly; our daughter only knows him from photos. Taras and I had so little time together—the war took him. But I am grateful to fate that we met and shared this short life. Time passes, but the longer it goes, the more I feel how much he is missing—for me and for our children.”

Taras Riabukha leaves behind a legacy of bravery, devotion, and love for his family—a memory that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Honoring fallen heroes like Taras Riabukha reflects society’s deep gratitude for their contributions to defending the country. These moments not only highlight the sacrifices made during the conflict but also underscore the importance of peace and stability in Ukraine. Families of the fallen, such as Natalia’s, continue to live with loss, which adds even greater weight to the need to remember those who gave their lives for the nation’s independence and integrity.

As we reflect on the sacrifices made by those like Taras Riabukha, it is important to also remember the stories of other brave soldiers who have inspired their communities. One such figure is Artur Svitukhov, whose leadership and heroism not only impacted his comrades but also became the basis for a children's book that celebrates courage and resilience in the face of adversity.
