Remembering Yuriy Petrovskyy
Ukrainian soldier Yuriy Petrovskyy was killed in action on August 18, 2024, at the age of 38, after stepping on a mine during a combat mission. He served as a section commander in the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platoon of the 80th Separate Air Assault Brigade. Born on February 16, 1986, in Khotyn, he was also laid to rest in his hometown.
Petrovskyy's military service defending Ukraine began in 2014 when he volunteered. He initially served as a mortar operator and later as a gun layer in the 80th Brigade. He saw combat in several key battles, including:
- Lyman
- Bakhmut
- Kreminna
- Kostiantynivka
- Izium
He returned to the military following the full-scale invasion in 2022. In May 2024, he took command of a UAV section, operating strike drones known as 'Vampir.' His unit was deployed to the Sumy region in early August, where they began offensive operations in Russia's Kursk Oblast—a significant incursion into Russian territory.
While on duty, Petrovskyy sustained an eye injury but continued his service. His comrade, Volodymyr (call sign 'Multik'), recounted that the commander, seeking to ensure the safety of a position himself despite warnings, triggered the fatal incident:
'The commander told him not to go, to send others to check the position. But Yura refused. He said he had to see for himself that it was safe. He went there and hit an anti-tank mine.' - Volodymyr, Yuriy's comrade
Yuriy Petrovskyy is survived by his parents, his wife, and his son. For his courage and dedication, he received multiple state honors:
- The Order for Courage, 3rd Class
- The Presidential Award 'For the Defence of Ukraine'
- The Order of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi
- The Medal 'For Sacrifice and Love for Ukraine'
- Posthumously, the Order for Courage, 2nd Class
His wife, Nadiya, shared his motivation: 'He said he went to fight for the country's true independence. So our children wouldn't have to seek a future abroad, so they could have a good life without war. The enemy will not spare us, and if we don't defend the state now, Ukrainians will not have a normal future.'
His death underscores the immense sacrifice Ukrainians continue to make in their fight for sovereignty. Petrovskyy's decade-long commitment, from the early days of the conflict in Donbas to the recent cross-border operations, exemplifies the resilience of Ukraine's defenders. Stories like his highlight the ongoing human cost of the war and the profound bravery of those on the front lines.
Yuriy Petrovskyy’s sacrifice is a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by Ukrainian defenders. Similar to the story of Ukrainian soldier Yurii Kostenko, who also lost his life while bravely fighting in the Donetsk region, Petrovskyy's commitment to his country highlights the profound risks taken by those on the front lines.
