The Loss of Vadym Tykhonovskyi

Ukraine has lost a soldier, photographer, and cinematographer, Vadym Tykhonovskyi, who was killed in combat. His death is a profound loss not only for the military but also for the nation's cultural sphere, where he made a significant impact. Vadym Tykhonovskyi was born on November 21, 1996, in Kyiv. In 2019, he graduated from the Department of Film and Television Arts at the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv's Institute of Journalism, where he studied in the creative workshop of Oleksandr Alyfanov. That same year, he participated in the Kinoko short documentary film competition with his film 'Creation.'

Service and Death

Prior to the war, Tykhonovskyi actively collaborated with Kyiv's theaters, creating reports on theatrical performances and artistic events, including the Scenography Biennale. Following the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, he was called up to serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He served in the 78th Separate Air Assault Regiment and was later attached to the 225th Separate Assault Regiment, where he qualified as a drone operator.

On July 22, 2025, Vadym Tykhonovskyi went missing during a combat mission near the village of Kindrativka in the Sumy region. His death was later officially confirmed, and it was revealed that he perished while saving the lives of four fellow soldiers. He was 28 years old at the time of his death and is survived by his parents, Oleksii and Liudmyla.

'Young and talented. He had his whole life ahead of him… Forever 28. Eternal memory and respect to Vadym, who gave his life for Ukraine. Bright memory and eternal glory to the Hero.'

The Institute of Journalism at Taras Shevchenko National University honored his artistic talent and character. His teachers and fellow students remember Vadym as an inspired artist, a dreamer, and a bright, sincere person.

The death of Vadym Tykhonovskyi underscores not just a personal tragedy but the broader loss of a generation of young Ukrainian artists who have laid down their lives in defense of their country. His contributions to Ukraine's cultural life and his active combat service exemplify the fusion of art and duty that has become a hallmark of this war. His memory and artistic legacy will endure in the hearts of those who knew him and those who value creativity forged in the crucible of conflict.
