New Rail Connection Planned
A direct train service connecting Kyiv, Ukraine, with Varna, Bulgaria, via Romania could begin operations as soon as early June. The journey is expected to take approximately 30 hours. According to Oleksiy Kuleba, Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration and Minister for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development, preliminary agreements on the route and schedule have been reached by the involved parties. This link would provide a vital overland connection to the Black Sea coast for Ukrainian travelers.
Proposed Train Route
The planned route will pass through the following cities:
- Kyiv
- Lviv
- Chernivtsi
- Suceava
- Bucharest
- Varna
The final travel time will be confirmed after a test run is conducted. Both Romania and Bulgaria have tentatively agreed to include this route under a Public Service Obligation (PSO) scheme. This mechanism allows for partial compensation of the operator's costs, which could lead to lower ticket prices for passengers.
'Our goal is to launch this connection at the beginning of June. [...] We have specifically worked on a route configuration that avoids idle rolling stock. This makes it possible not to increase ticket prices and to preserve wagon resources for other routes,' stated Oleksiy Kuleba.
The launch of this new rail service would mark a significant step in developing Ukraine's transport links with Bulgaria and Romania, simplifying access to new travel corridors. For context, establishing reliable international rail connections is a strategic priority for Ukraine's integration with European transport networks. This project has the potential to greatly enhance regional infrastructure, opening new opportunities for tourists and business travelers alike. A rail link between Ukraine and the Balkan Peninsula could also foster stronger economic ties and cultural exchange, supporting Ukraine's broader European integration efforts.
As Ukraine moves forward with its plans for a direct train service to Varna, it's worth noting that a similar initiative aimed at establishing a Ukraine-Bulgaria rail link through Romania is set for a trial run in the summer of 2026. This project highlights the ongoing efforts to enhance regional connectivity and improve transport options for travelers.
