Assassination attempt on Russian general in Abu Dhabi: how it will affect peace talks regarding the war

An assassination attempt on the deputy head of the Russian GRU, who was part of the Russian delegation at the talks in Abu Dhabi, took place against the backdrop of active discussions about the conditions for ending the war. Russia extradited to the United Arab Emirates the suspect - a citizen of Ukraine, a native of the Ternopil region, Lyubomyr Korba. Ukraine's Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba denied Ukraine's involvement in the incident, stating:

'We have no connection to this.'

Negotiations in Abu Dhabi

The negotiations in Abu Dhabi, divided into military and political components, are ongoing. According to the discussed plans, the first framework agreement should be signed by March 1, and a ceasefire is to be announced in March. Among the key unresolved issues between the US and Russia remain:

  • recognition of temporarily occupied territories
  • status of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant

President Volodymyr Zelensky, commenting on the course of negotiations, emphasized:

'We stand where we stand.'
He also stated that the minimum strength of the Armed Forces of Ukraine should be 800,000 personnel. The further development of events will depend on whether the parties can overcome the crisis of trust after the assassination attempt and find a compromise on the status of the occupied territories, security guarantees, and other contentious points of discussion.
