Zaporizhzhia Under Fire: The Strategic Logic Behind Russia's Attacks
In a recent interview, Yuriy Fedorenko, commander of the 429th Separate Brigade of Unmanned Systems 'Achilles', detailed the situation on the Zaporizhzhia front. He emphasized the city's critical role as a major Ukrainian industrial center and a primary target for Russian forces. Zaporizhzhia hosts numerous enterprises vital to Ukraine's economy, many of which also support the nation's defense industry. This makes the region a key strategic objective in the ongoing conflict.
In recent days, the city and surrounding oblast have come under intense attack. On January 29, Russian forces shelled Zaporizhzhia, damaging industrial infrastructure and sparking a major fire. Just two days later, on February 1, the city was targeted again, this time by drones. One strike hit a maternity hospital. Attacks also struck the Vilmiansk area of Zaporizhzhia district, causing a fire and damaging residential apartment blocks.

Fedorenko stated that Ukrainian units are doing everything possible to halt the enemy's advance and improve their positions where feasible. He noted that Zaporizhzhia is a large city and cannot be fully destroyed by missiles or drones alone. To achieve that, the enemy would first need to create the conditions to move closer, bringing the city under direct fire control with rocket artillery and conventional guns—a clear objective of the current Russian offensive.
