Science Day in Ukraine
Ukraine celebrates Science Day annually on the third Saturday of May. In 2026, the holiday falls on May 16. Established in 1997, this observance honors Ukrainian scientific achievements and promotes science literacy among the public.
The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NAS) was founded on November 27, 1918. Today, it comprises three sections, roughly 14 departments, and around 170 institutes and research facilities. Across the country, more than 1,400 research institutes and 330 higher education institutions operate, employing over 7,000 doctors of sciences and 78,000 candidates of sciences.
Researcher Pay in 2026
In 2026, the average salary in the scientific field is projected to fall between 15,000 and 18,000 hryvnias. Early-career specialists can expect around 10,000 to 12,000 hryvnias. The official base salary for the NAS president will be 22,463 hryvnias, while the vice president will earn 21,439 hryvnias. The academic secretary of NAS will receive a base salary of 19,312 hryvnias. Leading researchers will take home roughly 15,000 to 15,400 hryvnias, senior researchers 13,800 to 14,200 hryvnias, and junior researchers 12,000 to 12,700 hryvnias. The minimum guaranteed wage for NAS employees in 2026 will be 8,647 hryvnias.
Scientists can earn additional allowances for academic degrees and titles. For example, a candidate of sciences or PhD degree adds 15% to the base salary, while a doctor of sciences degree adds 25%. The allowance for the title of associate professor is also 25%, and for full professor, it is 33%. A seniority bonus starts at 10% for three years of experience and can reach 30% for over 20 years.
The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine (MES) has outlined a plan to boost researcher salaries by 50% over the course of 2026, backed by an extra 3 billion hryvnias in funding. Top-performing staff may receive up to 10,000 hryvnias in monthly bonuses. For state-ordered scientific and technical projects, a researcher's salary could reach as high as 35,000 hryvnias.
Ukraine's parliament is currently reviewing a bill that would set a minimum base salary of 30,000 hryvnias for research and teaching staff. If passed, assistants and lecturers would earn 30,000 hryvnias, senior lecturers 33,000 hryvnias, associate professors 36,300 hryvnias, and full professors 39,930 hryvnias.
There have been cases where scientists received monthly payments of up to 1 million hryvnias during major engineering projects. For comparison, in the IT sector, the median salary for data analysts is $2,200, while for data engineers it is $3,550. In non-IT companies, salaries for data analysts and data engineers range between $1,500 and $1,600.
As a reminder, UNESCO established World Science Day for Peace and Development, observed on November 10.
This day serves as a key opportunity to raise public awareness about scientific accomplishments and the need to support research activities in Ukraine. The planned salary increases for scientists could significantly improve working conditions in the field, potentially drawing more young professionals into science. The proposed bill on minimum base salaries also reflects growing attention to the challenges facing research and education in the country.
As the scientific community anticipates these changes in researcher compensation, it's important to note that physicists are also set for significant salary adjustments. The planned 50% increase for physicists by the end of 2026 signals a broader commitment to enhancing the financial stability of professionals in the field. Understanding these trends can provide valuable insights for those considering a career in science in Ukraine.
