Indian Authorities Detain Ukrainians Over Myanmar Drone Supply Allegations

Влада Індії арештувала українців в рамках розслідування поставок дронів у М'янму.

Ukrainian Nationals Detained in India

Indian authorities have detained a group of foreign nationals, including six Ukrainians, on suspicion of links to insurgent groups in Myanmar and supplying drones. The arrests took place on March 13, following a three-month surveillance operation by India's National Investigation Agency (NIA). The NIA has accused the Ukrainians of using or transferring drone technology and related equipment. The investigation reportedly relied on intelligence data provided by Russian security services, which formed the basis for the arrests. This case highlights the complex global security landscape where conflicts in one region can have unexpected legal repercussions in another.

Legal Proceedings and Diplomatic Response

The detainees face charges under Section 18 of India's Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, which pertains to conspiracy for terrorist acts. After their detention, all suspects were taken to Delhi, where they were initially remanded in custody for three days. A court later extended their detention until March 27, adding a further 11 days. Three of the Ukrainian nationals were arrested at Lucknow Airport, the other three in Delhi, and an American citizen was also detained at Kolkata Airport.

While all detainees had entered India legally, they subsequently traveled to the state of Mizoram without the required permit to visit restricted areas. The investigation has established that the suspects may have been organizing the supply of large consignments of drones from Europe to Myanmar via Indian territory.

The Embassy of Ukraine in India has requested that local authorities grant consular access to the detained Ukrainian citizens, but such access has not yet been provided.

The Ukrainian Embassy stated that 'any allegations related to terrorism must be considered exclusively on the basis of verified facts, transparent procedures, and full interstate cooperation.'

This situation is a source of concern for both Ukraine and India. The detention of Ukrainians on terrorism-related charges has the potential to strain diplomatic relations between the two nations, particularly against the backdrop of tension caused by the war in Ukraine. As the investigation continues, its outcome will be closely watched by international observers, with possible implications for regional stability and security.

In light of these developments, the situation has prompted the Ukrainian government to advocate for the rights of its detained citizens. The Embassy of Ukraine has emphasized the need for consular access, which has yet to be granted.
