2026 World Team Table Tennis Championships
At the 2026 World Team Table Tennis Championships in London, the Romanian women’s team delivered an impressive performance, defeating France 3–1 in the quarterfinals. Bernadette Szőcs secured the decisive point for Romania. However, after the win, the team celebrated by jumping on the playing table, causing damage to it. The incident occurred just 15 minutes before the France vs. Brazil match was set to begin. The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) technical crew had to inspect and recalibrate the table.
Ukraine Women’s Team Performance
In another part of the tournament, the Ukrainian women’s team unfortunately fell short in the Round of 16, losing 0–3 to Japan. In the Ukraine vs. Japan match:
- Anastasiia Dmytrenko lost to Honoka Hashimoto with a score of 0–3 (9–11, 7–11, 4–11).
- Veronika Matiunina also failed to earn points for Ukraine, losing to Miwa Harimoto 0–3 (9–11, 5–11, 6–11).
- Tetiana Bilenko concluded the team’s run, losing to Hina Hayata 0–3 (5–11, 6–11, 5–11).
Despite the Round of 16 loss, the Ukrainian women’s team had previously advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating the United States. Japan, after beating Ukraine, moved on to the finals where they will face China.
Romania’s victory over France not only highlights their athletic potential but also raises questions about celebration ethics during competitions. The table damage incident served as a reminder of the importance of adhering to safety protocols at sporting events.
At the same time, the Ukrainian team’s showing at the championship, despite the defeat, reflects their progress and potential in international table tennis, as reaching the quarterfinals is a significant achievement for the squad.
While Romania celebrated its impressive victory over France, the Ukrainian women's team faced a different fate in the tournament. Their journey ended in the Round of 16 after a tough match against Japan. This performance, however, showcased their resilience and growth in the sport.
