Coaching Shake-Up Hits Ukraine's National Hockey Team
Ukraine's ice hockey federation has failed to reach an agreement with the national team's coaching staff ahead of the upcoming season in the elite division. As a result, the entire coaching unit, led by Dmytro Khrystych, has stepped down after their contracts expired and negotiations over improved financial terms broke down.
The following coaches have left their positions:
- Head coach Dmytro Khrystych,
- Assistant coach Oleh Shafarenko,
- Coach Ihor Karpenko.
The coaching staff's contracts had run their course, and they could not secure better financial conditions following Ukraine's promotion to the top tier of the World Championship. For the 2026/2027 season, the national team will operate under a new coaching staff, which is expected to be appointed shortly.
Previous Coaching Team's Track Record
Under Khrystych, Shafarenko, and Karpenko, Ukraine achieved remarkable progress over three years, earning two promotions: to Division IA in 2024 and to the elite division in 2026. This marked the team's return to the top flight for the first time in two decades.
Following this success, Ukraine climbed in the IIHF world rankings from 22nd to 19th place. This was a significant milestone, as the country had not been in the top 20 since 2012, and had hit a low point of 28th place in 2022.
Unofficial sources suggest that Oleksandr Bobkin and Ruslan Borysenko, who currently coach Ukraine's under-18 national team, are potential candidates for the head coach role. The Ice Hockey Federation of Ukraine continues to explore optimal solutions for the national team's development amid new challenges.

The achievements of the previous coaching staff, including the rise in world rankings, set high expectations for the incoming team, which must maintain the positive momentum. It is crucial that the new coach can effectively adapt to the challenges ahead and ensure consistency in the team's performances.
