Ukraine's Volleyball Team Names Squad for Nations League Amid Uncertainty Over Plotnytskyi's Participation

Збірна України з волейболу оголосила склад на Лігу Націй, попри невизначеність з участю Плотницького.

Men's National Volleyball Team of Ukraine: 2026 Nations League Roster

The Ukrainian men's volleyball team has announced its lineup for the opening week of the 2026 Nations League, set to take place in China. While Oleh Plotnytskyi is included on the roster, his availability remains uncertain due to a delay in obtaining his travel documents. The squad is scheduled to compete in four matches from June 10 to 14.

Argentina's Raúl Lozano serves as the head coach of the national team. Although the extended roster features 15 players, only 14 will take the court at the tournament's start. Plotnytskyi, an outside hitter for the Italian club Perugia, previously won the Champions League with that team. However, in 2025, he announced his retirement from international play. Despite that decision, he later declared his return to the national team ahead of the new season.

Currently, Plotnytskyi remains in Europe due to complications with his paperwork as he awaits a new Ukrainian passport. He has not yet traveled to China, casting doubt on his participation in the matches. The team also includes four other outside hitters, among them Dmytro Yanchuk, who was the top scorer in last year's Nations League campaign.

Match Schedule and Team Roster

Ukraine's schedule for the first week of the Nations League is as follows:

  • June 10 — vs. Japan at 3:00 PM
  • June 11 — vs. China at 11:30 AM
  • June 12 — vs. Cuba at 11:30 AM
  • June 14 — vs. Poland at 8:00 AM

Ukraine will face Japan, Poland, Cuba, and China during the tournament.

The national team boasts a strong lineup, which includes:

  • Setters: Yurii Synytsia (Hebei, China) and Vitalii Shchytkov (Epitsentr-Podoliany)
  • Opposite hitters: Vasyl Tupchii (Barkom-Kazhany) and Maksym Tonkonoh (Fano, Italy)
  • Middle blockers: Vladyslav Shchurov (Barkom-Kazhany), Yurii Semeniuk (Projekt Warsaw, Poland), Denys Veletskyi, Andrii Cheleniak (both from Epitsentr-Podoliany / Ukraine U20)
  • Liberos: Yevhenii Boiko (Reshetylivka) and Yaroslav Pampushko (Barkom-Kazhany)

The questionable status of Oleh Plotnytskyi could significantly impact the team, as his experience and skills are crucial for a strong performance. In the meantime, other players who have received call-ups have a chance to showcase their abilities on the international stage.

The Nations League competition opens up new opportunities for young volleyball players and could serve as an important milestone in preparation for future international tournaments.
