Ukraine Launches Youth Recruitment Drive for Skeleton Team
Mykhailo Heraskevych, head of the All-Ukrainian Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation, has announced a youth recruitment drive for the national skeleton team, scheduled for April. The primary goal is to prepare athletes for the 2028 and 2032 Youth Olympic Games. To compete in the 2028 Games, the federation aims to find two or three girls born in 2010, while for the 2032 Olympics, they are seeking children born in 2014 or 2015. Skeleton, a high-speed winter sliding sport, requires a unique combination of athleticism and technical precision.
Mykhailo Heraskevych noted that an exact date for the tryouts is yet to be set, but he hopes to attract motivated children.
"We will assess their running, jumping, coordination, and strength metrics, as well as their cognitive abilities. We'll ask them questions from mathematics and basic physics. We want to see if they have an understanding of concepts like mechanics,"he explained. Heraskevych also expressed a desire for children to attend with their parents, believing this could help identify intelligent and driven candidates.
Setback for Vladyslav Heraskevych
In a separate development, Ukrainian skeleton athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych will be unable to compete at the 2026 Winter Olympics due to a disqualification related to his helmet. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) banned him from competing in a specific helmet, leading to his disqualification just before his first run. The Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected Heraskevych's appeal against the IOC, which, alongside the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF), ruled that the athlete's helmet did not comply with the Olympic Charter. Consequently, the Ukrainian team concluded its participation in the 2026 Winter Olympics without winning any medals.
This youth recruitment initiative represents a crucial step in preparing for future Olympic Games and underscores the federation's commitment to developing the sport within the country. Following the recent disqualification of a top athlete, this talent search is seen as vital for identifying a new generation to represent Ukraine on the world stage and rebuild the nation's standing in skeleton racing.
As the Ukrainian skeleton team looks to the future with its youth recruitment initiative, it's worth noting the recent challenges faced by the national athletes. The situation surrounding Vladyslav Heraskevych’s disqualification highlights the complexities of Olympic competition.
