Andrea Maldera Arrives in Kyiv
Andrea Maldera is set to land in Kyiv on May 18, with the Executive Committee of the Ukrainian Association of Football (UAF) expected to confirm him as head coach of the Ukrainian national team the following day, May 19. This appointment marks a historic milestone, as Maldera becomes the first foreign specialist to take the helm of the squad, signaling a fresh direction for Ukrainian football.
The Italian expert previously worked within AC Milan’s system until June 2016, serving as a technical development coach and match analyst. Over five years, he assisted head coach Andriy Shevchenko—a partnership that will continue, as Shevchenko himself will introduce Maldera to the team.
Most recently, Maldera acted as an assistant coach for French club Marseille. In August 2021, he left the Ukrainian national team setup to join English side Brighton & Hove Albion.
Looking Ahead
On May 20, Shevchenko and Maldera are scheduled to attend the Ukrainian Cup final, where Dynamo Kyiv will face Chernihiv at Arena Lviv. In June, Ukraine will play two friendly matches against Poland and Denmark. The team is also set to compete in League B of the Nations League in fall 2026, facing Hungary, Georgia, and Northern Ireland.
Maldera’s appointment as head coach represents a landmark moment for Ukrainian football, reflecting the UAF’s willingness to embrace new strategies and international expertise to boost competitiveness on the global stage. His collaboration with Andriy Shevchenko, who brings substantial experience leading the national team, could ensure a smooth transition and help the squad tackle upcoming challenges, including the Nations League fixtures.
Maldera's appointment follows the recent decision by Rebrov to decline a new contract, highlighting a significant shift in leadership for the national team. This transition not only underscores the UAF's commitment to innovative coaching methods but also sets the stage for a new era in Ukrainian football as they prepare for upcoming matches against Poland and Denmark.
