Ukrainian President's Statement on Peace Negotiations

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued directives for upcoming peace negotiations. The most recent talks between Ukraine, the United States, and Russia were held in Geneva, where significant progress was made. That meeting concluded on February 18, with a follow-up session planned for Switzerland. The head of Ukraine's negotiating team, Rustem Umerov, has been instructed to involve Middle Eastern nations and Turkey in the conflict resolution process.

Zelenskyy emphasized the critical importance of not devaluing the struggle, courage, and dignity Ukraine has demonstrated throughout the war.

"We cannot, we cannot give this up, forget it, or betray it," stated Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The President also noted that 'history is watching us closely' and insisted that the negotiation process must take place in Europe.

Assessment of the Negotiation Process

Head of the President's Office, Kyrylo Budanov, described the latest discussions as difficult but crucial. He stressed that the details of the negotiations cannot be made public. Budanov observed that only two potential outcomes exist:

  • The parties agree to end the war,
  • or combat operations will continue.
"There is no third option," said Kyrylo Budanov.

White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre also confirmed that substantial progress was achieved during the trilateral talks in Geneva. Zelenskyy believes that involving Middle Eastern countries and Turkey will enable them to contribute more effectively to the peace settlement process. These nations have maintained diplomatic channels with Russia and could potentially act as mediators.

These negotiations represent a critical stage in seeking a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The inclusion of new participants, specifically Middle Eastern states and Turkey, could create additional opportunities for constructive dialogue and compromise. However, as Ukrainian officials noted, the outcome of the talks remains uncertain, and the situation requires continued close monitoring.
