52nd G7 Summit Held in Évian-les-Bains

From June 15 to 17, the 52nd G7 summit took place in Évian-les-Bains, France, with the war in Ukraine dominating the agenda. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, a guest at the event, held several bilateral meetings with leaders from Germany, Canada, the United Kingdom, the IMF, and the United States. Notably, Zelenskyy announced plans to initiate peace negotiations with Russia before the onset of winter, to be hosted in a neutral country.

Key Meetings and Agreements

A significant meeting occurred between Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump during the summit. Trump stated that Russia should reach a peace agreement with Ukraine. Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized that a Russian military victory is not an option. Zelenskyy also reported that Trump agreed Ukraine needs more anti-aircraft missiles and responded positively to a request for licenses to produce anti-ballistic missiles. U.S. and Ukrainian teams are already working on this matter.

Zelenskyy also held bilateral talks with other leaders, including:

  • Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada
  • Keir Starmer, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom
  • Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the IMF

During the summit, Zelenskyy greeted UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Additionally, a closed-door meeting took place between Zelenskyy, Trump, and French President Emmanuel Macron, where Zelenskyy showed a photo of the attacked Kyiv Pechersk Lavra.

G7 leaders agreed to increase air defense supplies for Ukraine and tighten sanctions against Russia. In a joint statement, they praised Ukraine's battlefield progress in recent months and pledged continued support to help the country survive the coming winter. They also committed to intensifying pressure on Russia's war economy.

Summit guests stayed at the Royal hotel in Évian, which opened in 1909 and sits on the shores of Lake Geneva. The hotel complex spans 47 acres, with double rooms starting at £384 per night. Trump arrived nearly an hour late to the summit session, raising questions among organizers. Friedrich Merz gave Trump a German national team jersey with the number 47 and his surname on it.

The atmosphere was tense, as Macron reportedly worried that Trump might disrupt the summit.

“Macron had no idea until the last moment whether Trump would last all three days without disrupting the work while he was there,” noted The Guardian.
Trump, for his part, remarked:
“I’m the boss here.”

This summit marked a critical moment in international politics, underscoring major world leaders' support for Ukraine and the G7's commitment to strengthening regional security. Amid growing threats from Russia, agreements on military aid and tighter sanctions could significantly impact the course of the war in Ukraine and global stability.
