Ukraine's President Appeals to Washington for Air Defense Support
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has sent a formal request to U.S. President Donald Trump and the U.S. Congress, asking for Patriot missile batteries and additional air defense systems. The letter, dated May 25, was made public by Axios journalist Barak Ravid. In his appeal, Zelenskyy provides a detailed account of a large-scale Russian attack on May 24, citing specific damage statistics and urging the United States to bolster its support.
Details of the Assault
According to Zelenskyy's letter, Russia deployed a significant arsenal during the assault, including:
- 54 cruise missiles,
- 30 ballistic missiles,
- three Zircon hypersonic missiles,
- two Kinzhal air-launched ballistic missiles.
In addition, roughly 600 attack drones were used in the operation. The strikes resulted in nearly one hundred injuries and multiple fatalities. The following infrastructure was damaged:
- 352 residential buildings,
- 19 schools and educational facilities,
- two museums, including the Chernobyl Museum, which was completely destroyed by a direct missile hit.
The National Art Museum was also damaged, and a market in Kyiv was burned to the ground.
Zelenskyy's request comes amid an escalation in Russian aerial attacks on Ukraine. Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has warned of 'systematic strikes' against Ukrainian defense industry facilities in Kyiv. In response, Ukraine's Foreign Ministry accused the Kremlin of using intimidation tactics to pressure the United States. Poland has also threatened Russia with consequences if diplomatic missions in Kyiv are targeted.
In his letter, Zelenskyy specifically requests Patriot PAC-3 missiles and additional systems.
Dear Mr. President, Dear Representatives, Dear Friends and Allies, Dear Americans,he writes. He also emphasizes Ukraine's readiness for long-term cooperation with European allies to expand joint production of Patriot systems and missiles. Furthermore, Ukraine has proposed a collaboration framework to the U.S. called the Drone Deal.
God bless America! Glory to Ukraine!Zelenskyy adds in his appeal. 'With gratitude,' he concludes the letter.
This diplomatic move marks a critical step in Ukraine's efforts to secure military aid from the United States, which could significantly influence the conflict's trajectory. As Russia intensifies its threats and launches new attacks, protecting Ukraine's airspace has become essential for safeguarding civilians and infrastructure. The steps Ukraine is taking to forge closer ties with American allies may shape the region's security landscape going forward.
In light of the ongoing discussions about military support, it's crucial to note that President Zelenskyy has also engaged with EU leaders regarding Ukraine's defense capabilities. His conversation with strengthening air defense systems highlights the broader international efforts to bolster Ukraine's security amidst escalating threats.
