Russian Troop Casualties in Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has disclosed that Russian forces have suffered over 145,000 casualties in Ukraine since the beginning of 2026. The figures, based on a report from Ukraine's Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi and shared via Telegram, break down to nearly 86,000 killed and at least 59,000 seriously wounded. Additionally, more than 800 Russian service members have been taken into Ukraine's prisoner exchange fund. This update comes as the conflict continues to take a heavy toll on Moscow's military.
Assessments of Russian Army Losses
Western analysts estimate that the Russian army is losing approximately 35,000 soldiers per month, combining both killed and wounded. Among Russian opposition journalists, the death toll is believed to be even higher—352,000, with around 217,800 of those fatalities individually verified. These statistics indicate that for five consecutive months, Russian forces have been losing more personnel than they are able to mobilize.
Since the start of 2026, total Russian military losses have exceeded 141,500, with over 83,000 of those being irreversible. Such numbers highlight the severe challenges the Russian army faces on the front lines, as well as the consequences of the prolonged armed conflict in Ukraine.
The heavy losses sustained by Russian troops in Ukraine underscore the difficult battlefield situation and point to potential issues with mobilization and army sustainment. This could also shape Russia's future military strategies, as a shrinking pool of personnel may limit their capacity to conduct active combat operations. In the context of an ongoing war, casualty data is critical for analyzing and forecasting regional developments.
