Ukraine's President on EU Financial Aid

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed confidence that the first installment from the European Union's €90 billion assistance package will arrive by late spring, specifically between the end of May and early June. These funds are earmarked to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities and expand its domestic defense industry. A key priority for this initial tranche is the procurement of Ukrainian-made drones.

Unlocking Sanctions Remains a Priority

Zelenskyy also stressed the critical need to unblock the 20th sanctions package against Russia, confirming that Ukraine is actively working on this issue.

“Of course, we worked to achieve a positive result so that the €90 billion would be unlocked—this is vital for us. And it is very important that the 20th sanctions package is also unblocked, and that we continue working on further sanctions, putting pressure on Russian energy and Russia's shadow fleet,” said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The main areas of funding will be:

  • strengthening the military;
  • boosting domestic weapons production.

Structured as a two-year loan from the EU, this credit line allows Ukraine to reinforce its long-term defense posture. The president also addressed the operation of the Druzhba oil pipeline, underscoring the importance of Ukraine honoring its commitments to the European Union.

“The first tranche—we are counting on it and will work to speed it up as much as possible so we receive the money by the end of May or early June. This is about strengthening our army and increasing domestic weapons production,” said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Securing this financial support from the European Union is critically important for Ukraine given the current security environment. This tranche will not only enhance the country's defensive strength but also stimulate the growth of its local defense industrial base, a strategic asset for Ukraine's sovereignty. Meanwhile, unblocking sanctions against Russia remains a key element of international support and pressure on the aggressor, highlighting the need for continued cooperation with the EU.

As Ukraine prepares to receive crucial financial support, understanding the broader context of the EU's recent decisions becomes essential. The approval of a substantial loan and new sanctions against Russia highlights the EU's commitment to strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities amid ongoing challenges. This development not only complements the upcoming tranche but also reinforces the international community's stance against Russian aggression.
