Meeting Between Giorgia Meloni and Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the NATO Summit
On July 8, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara. During the discussion, Zelenskyy briefed Meloni on the ongoing shelling of Ukraine and the resulting casualties. He also addressed the prospects for joint development of anti-ballistic missile systems and highlighted the urgent need for additional rockets to bolster Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.
Zelenskyy reported that Russian forces had launched ballistic missiles and attack drones against Ukrainian cities. These strikes claimed five lives in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Kherson. The president stated,
“Russia continues to bombard our cities and communities. Today, we saw more ballistic attacks and drone launches. Tragically, there are fatalities,”and extended his condolences to the families of the victims.
Joint Initiatives and Italy’s Role in Supporting Ukraine
Discussing potential collaboration on anti-ballistic defense in Europe, Zelenskyy stressed the importance of protection for all nations, saying:
“Joint work on anti-ballistic systems in Europe could provide stronger security for everyone—Ukraine and every other country alike.”He also emphasized the pressing requirement for more surface-to-air missiles and expressed hope for continued Italian support, adding:
“Italy has always been a principled partner in defending lives. Thank you!”
Zelenskyy arrived in Ankara on July 7, where leaders from all 32 NATO member states gathered for the alliance’s summit held on July 7–8. At the summit, the Ukrainian president announced that Ukraine eliminates approximately 30,000 Russian troops each month, primarily using drones. He also met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Ankara. Their discussions covered:
- strengthening Ukraine’s air defense systems
- urgent deliveries of missiles for air defense platforms
- joint weapons production initiatives
- expanding defense cooperation with allied nations
The meeting between Zelenskyy and Meloni took place amid an escalating threat from Russia, underscoring the critical need for international backing of Ukraine. Talks on joint anti-ballistic projects and reinforced air defenses reflect Ukraine’s drive to find new ways to protect its territory. In turn, Italy’s active engagement in these efforts could enhance broader European security, given the dangers posed by Russian aggression.
As the situation in Ukraine intensifies, Zelenskyy's call for enhanced defense measures underscores the urgency of international collaboration. This aligns with recent announcements regarding the establishment of a coalition aimed at strengthening anti-ballistic missile capabilities.
