Conversation with Ursula von der Leyen

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen held talks focused on bolstering Ukraine’s air defense and anti-ballistic capabilities, as well as the country’s progress toward European Union membership. During their discussion, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to von der Leyen for backing the Drone Deal initiative, noting that Europe possesses the necessary resources to support it. This dialogue comes as Ukraine continues to push for deeper integration with the EU while facing ongoing security challenges.

“Europe has the right capabilities, and we discussed this, particularly within the framework of our work with the EU on the Drone Deal track. Thank you, Ursula, for supporting this format. It’s important that our teams are actively working, and there are already countries ready to join.” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Zelenskyy also reaffirmed Ukraine’s readiness to open all six negotiation clusters with the EU, emphasizing that the first cluster, known as Fundamentals, is expected to be launched in June. He highlighted the urgency of receiving the initial tranche from the European support package as soon as possible.

“We are fully prepared to open all six negotiation clusters and expect that the first cluster - Fundamentals - can be opened as early as June. It is equally important that the first tranche from the European support package arrives as soon as possible. There is a date - we hope everything will be implemented exactly as we agreed.” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Military Threats and International Support

Amid rising military threats, Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has warned of systematic strikes on Ukraine’s defense-industrial facilities in Kyiv, specifically mentioning attacks on decision-making centers. In response, Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused the Kremlin of using intimidation tactics to pressure the United States and its allies. Poland has also warned Russia of consequences if diplomatic missions in Kyiv are targeted.

Zelenskyy sent a letter to U.S. President Donald Trump and the U.S. Congress, outlining a critical shortage of air defense systems in Ukraine. This situation underscores the vital role of international support in ensuring Ukraine’s security as military threats escalate.

The discussion between Zelenskyy and von der Leyen highlights Ukraine’s active efforts to integrate into the European Union and the urgent need to strengthen its defensive capabilities amid growing threats from Russia. Partner commitments to provide assistance, particularly in air defense, are crucial for regional stability. At the same time, Russian threats remain a serious challenge, requiring a coordinated response from the international community.
