Ukrainian President Meets with UN High Commissioner
On February 19, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting with UN High Commissioner Barham Salih. Their discussion focused on the severe consequences of Russia's ongoing attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure and the urgent need for increased humanitarian aid for the affected population. Zelenskyy emphasized the critical situation created by the relentless strikes and called for greater international pressure on the aggressor to halt these assaults.
Preparing for the Next Heating Season
Separately, President Zelenskyy chaired a daily meeting dedicated to heat and electricity supply issues across the regions. The central topic was planning a 'major reconstruction' of community energy supplies for the upcoming winter. This strategy will build on successful cases of decentralizing energy sources and protecting critical facilities in frontline areas. The meeting also included reports on the progress of repair work in regions facing the most severe challenges.
Zelenskyy stressed the importance of international backing, stating: 'We discussed the consequences of Russia's constant attacks on Ukraine's energy system and the necessary aid for our people. More pressure is needed to stop these attacks and more support is needed for our people.'
The meeting with the UN High Commissioner underscores the Ukrainian government's growing alarm over the impact of Russian strikes on the nation's critical energy infrastructure. With Ukraine's winters being notoriously harsh, a reliable energy supply is a matter of life and death for millions of civilians. Concurrently, the plans for a 'major reconstruction' of the energy supply indicate a strategic approach to rebuilding and adapting the system to wartime conditions, which could yield long-term benefits for the country's resilience.
He also expressed gratitude for the UN's support: 'We greatly appreciate your support throughout this entire period. I hope we can count on its continuation.'
