Outcome of Trilateral Consultations
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has summarized the results of a second round of trilateral talks, which concluded in the United Arab Emirates on February 5, 2026. Military delegations from Ukraine, the United States, and Russia participated in these consultations. The primary subject of discussion was the technical monitoring of a potential ceasefire, a critical step for any future peace agreement.
Key Issues Under Discussion
The meeting addressed matters of technical oversight for a possible ceasefire, with the status of the front line remaining the most contentious point. The Russian delegation demanded the withdrawal of Ukrainian Armed Forces from parts of Donetsk Oblast not currently under Russian occupation. Zelenskyy noted that the military delegations discussed how technical monitoring could be implemented, contingent on a political decision to end the war.
The American side confirmed its involvement in the monitoring process and proposed hosting the next meeting of Ukrainian and Russian negotiation groups in the United States. According to Zelenskyy, the military participants support the idea of American involvement, believing the presence of foreign observers, including Americans, is essential to ensure a genuine ceasefire. However, he added that the U.S. is not yet prepared to discuss the inclusion of observers from other nations at this stage.
Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine's current stance of 'holding our positions' represents the most fair and reliable model for a potential ceasefire at present.
These talks demonstrate ongoing diplomatic efforts to achieve peace in the region, despite the significant challenges facing the conflicting parties. The involvement of the United States in monitoring could bolster trust in any ceasefire agreements and provide additional support for Ukraine. However, Russia's demand for a Ukrainian withdrawal from specific territories indicates that reaching a compromise may prove difficult in future negotiations.
