Open to Negotiations

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has confirmed he is prepared to hold direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The announcement came during a joint meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine cannot afford to wait for the international community to resolve other global conflicts before refocusing on the Russia-Ukraine war. He stated that he is willing to engage in face-to-face negotiations with Putin if doing so can accelerate the path to peace.

Currently, Ukraine is expecting the arrival of an official negotiating team from the United States. Zelenskyy also noted that for the U.S., Iran remains the top foreign policy priority at this time. The most favorable scenario for Ukraine would involve simultaneous participation from both the United States and European partners in the negotiation process. Ukraine’s primary goal remains the swiftest possible cessation of hostilities.

Last Meeting Between the Leaders

The last in-person meeting between Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin took place on December 9, 2019, in Paris. That meeting was part of a Normandy Format summit, which included leaders from Ukraine, Russia, France, and Germany. Discussions focused on resolving the conflict in Donbas, exchanging prisoners, and implementing the Minsk agreements. Zelenskyy remarked that Ukraine has effectively been placed in a queue of ongoing wars, underscoring the urgency of resolving the conflict.

In the context of the ongoing conflict and the international community’s growing attention to other geopolitical issues, such as the situation in Iran, support from partners remains crucial. The arrival of an official U.S. negotiating team could significantly influence the course of events and the potential for reaching a compromise between the parties.
